It is becoming more common for clients to pack there own moving boxes for their furniture removals and by doing so this can save you money. In saying that, there are a few common rules that one should follow for successful packing of your goods which will dramatically reduce the risk of damage.

It is always preferred that you use professional moving boxes for packing as they are built specifically for the job, grocery boxes are designed for pallets not free stacking. Removal cartons have been designed by furniture removalists for the furniture removals industry, and are therefore far more resilient and sturdy.

Moving boxes for packingThere are two primary sizes of Packing Boxes.

- Standard or T-chest : 65cmx45cmx40cm
- Book and Wine: 40cmx40cmx30cm

These sizes may vary slightly depending on where they are purchased from. When packing boxes for moving, the weight should not exceed 25kg. A good rule of thumb is; if you can carry it our furniture removalists will have no problems. For small weighty items, book boxes should be used and for larger items/linen/clothing etc, standard cartons are suitable. Please ensure that enough paper has been used, to eliminate items from moving during transit as this is generally when damage can occur.

Packing paper:
Clean butchers paper should be used for all packing needs. Most moving companies or storage facilities can supply you with the correct material. Newspaper may seem like a cheap option, but the ink can mark your plates and glassware. The use of butcher’s paper eliminates the need for re-washing of items.

Tape:
There are many varieties of tape and most tape that is approximately 5 to 8cm wide will be fine. We recommend taping all seams of the moving boxes and taping across the packing boxes as well.

Port a robes:
If required, port a robes can be purchased or hired. Port a robes are designed for clothing that would usually be hung in a wardrobe etc. To work out Port a robe requirements for your furniture removals, the general formula is for every lineal metre of hanging space equals one Port a robe.
